Through five years of attempts, discouragement, setbacks, and triumphs, their
family efforts resulted in the 2002 implementation of "Larissa," a certified
prototype for the Assistive Search Alert dogs now available through the Dogs For
Autism service dog program.
At the time, Kelly was barely aware of how widespread the disability was
becoming, but she knew her family needed answers. Determined to find them,
and to restore all possible independence to her son, she set out on a path that
ultimately opened a whole new world of possibilities, not only for her own family,
but for many others.
To achieve her goal, the initial need was to complete an apprenticeship as a
service dog trainer--but it didn't stop there. Today, Kelly is the the Executive
Director of the training program, and the program is moving ahead with a goal to
make the service dogs for autism much more widely available across the United
States. But it all began in Georgia, long years ago, with parents determined to
minimize risk and maximize life for a little boy.
The Uncharted Way will take you with the Capers family on a roller-coaster
journey of success and disappointments, bringing home like never before what is
reality--and joy--for the many people who live with the disability of autism.

The True Story of America's First
Assistive Search Alert dog
All remarkable achievements begin with
a single, strong idea . . .
Like many thousands of American families, the Capers' entire world
was turned upside down when they realized their son had autism.
Kelly Capers, author, teacher, parent, and long-time dog person
believed there were significant possibilities for her son through the
use of a properly trained dog.
And nobody was going to convince her otherwise.
